Sur la plage littorale proprement dite, on distingue : le bas de plage, lissé ou modelé par des levées et des sillons selon les états de la mer; le haut de plage, occupé par des cordons littoraux sapés en gradins de plage.

Une ligne de flexion à partir de laquelle tout diminue brusquement comme le calibre des sédiments si l'estran est constitué à la fois par des galets et des sables, marque le passage au bas de plage qui est submergé à chaque marée. Sa partie aval montre parfois une alternance de bancs surbaissés et de gouttières ou bâches dans lesquelles subsiste de l'eau à marée basse.

Il atteint son plus grand développement sur les côtes planes et à fort marnage. On distingue les estrans vaseux, sableux ou rocheux (en ce dernier cas, il peut correspondre à une plate-forme d'abrasion.)

Portion du rivage [...] elle est en France propriété de l'État. Quasi-inexistant en Méditerranée, l'estran est très étendu dans la baie du Mont-Saint-Michel (France) et en baie de Fundy (Canada).
